What does it mean to know a word?
1. Know the meaning. This may involve both the dictionary definition and associations of the word.
2. Know how to spell it and say it.
3. Know the part of speech e.g. noun, verb or adjective.
4. Know how to use the word grammatically in a sentence.
5. Know which words it does, or does not collocate with.
This book aims to teach all of these aspects of acquiring vocabulary.
This book Aims to:
-Improve the vocabulary of children in Grades 4 to 7.
-Encourage students to really get to know words, acquire and internalize vocabulary for use, and not just memorize a word list.
-Teach vocabulary learning skills to enable students to go on to further self-study.
-Provide interesting and varied exercises to test and consolidate learning.
Organization of the Book
- The book comprises 25 units each with two lessons followed by 3 exercises.
- Each Unit contains about 20-25 new target words shown in bold.
- Each unit and each lesson has a theme containing related words. This makes it easier to learn the new words and use them in context.
Some Examples of Themes in the book are;
Compound Nouns, Extreme Adjectives, Greek Origin, Idiomatic Verbs, Antonyms, Synonyms etc.
-The units are self-contained and it is not necessary to study the book page by page. Students and teachers can dip into any part of the book to meet specific needs.
-There is a Table of Contents at the beginning and an alphabetical word list at the end to help you find what you need.
